Essenden Road, Belvedere, c. 1910
Essenden Road near the junction with Woolwich Road.
The road at this time was home to many professional people living in the large houses built in the late 1800s.
The development of Upper Belvedere had been devoted mainly to large detached villas intended for those who kept servants and a carriage.
The residents resisted the introduction of the trams and helped to preserve a secluded village atmosphere well into the twentieth century.
