Thamesmead Under Construction, 1968
Thamesmead buildings stand out as a spectacle which demands your attention. The architecture is consistent. It announces uncompromisingly that this is a new community whose surroundings will be an artificial environment of streets and alleyways enclosed by concrete.
The lower photograph shows construction of five access ways at the back of Coralline Walk.
Access had to be provided as there were no frontages to the flats. This foundation was to be filled later with earth and grass before the residents moved in.
