St. Paul's Chapel was built in 1815 as a chapel of ease to the new Holy Trinity parish church, to replace the original Clapham Old Church following an increase in the congregation.

The architect Christopher Edmonds kept the design simple and cheap and it was built at a cost of £5,000.
