New Cross Station (not changed to New Cross Gate until 1923) on the London and Croydon Line was opened in 1839 following in part the route of the disused Croydon Canal.

The works beside the station caught fire in October 1844 just as Louis Philippe was arriving to catch his train after a visit to Queen Victoria.
