Windsor Walk, Camberwell, Southwark, c.1900
The Denmark Hill area developed as a desirable high class suburb from the late 18th century onwards and included some of South London's grandest mansions.
After the arrival of the railway in 1867 the area became more popular and development intensified, but the area's prestigious character remained largely intact.
The houses immediately adjacent to Denmark Hill station date from the 1850s. The area was particularly popular with German immigrants and the sloping roof of the Lutheran chapel can be seen just above the delivery cart.
Some of these houses have been demolished and the adjacent Maudsley Hospital has expanded into the site.
